AJAX CAPE TOWN 1
2 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: PSL
Date: Sunday, 06 November 2011
Venue: Cape Town Stadium
Kick-off: 15:00pm
Lamontville Golden Arrows grabbed a semifinal berth in the Telkom Knockout after defeating Ajax Cape Town 2-1 away at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday.
It was the second giant-killing act for the club in the competition after beating league leaders SuperSport United away in the first round.
Goals from captain Thanduyise Khuboni and striker Thamsanqa Gabuza saw Arrows book a place in Monday’s semifinal draw along with Orlando Pirates, Santos and Wits.
Dillon Sheppard set up both goals for Arrows, first after being scythed down by Thulani Hlatshwayo, the Ajax fullback, and then hitting a shot that took a deflection off Gabuza and into the net.
The first goal came in the 32nd minute after Sheppard’s run on the left saw him catch the Ajax defender for pace and was brought down. Khuboni took a successful penalty by sending Ajax goalkeeper Sander Westerveld the wrong way.
Ajax equalised after half-time when Arrows defence found it difficult to clear a bouncing ball and Ajax captain Granwald Scott jumped onto the ball and shot home from close range.
But Arrows showed great fighting spirit as they went back in search of restoring their lead, eventually scoring with nine minutes left.
A strong run down the flank from Siyanda Zwane saw him draw the ball back for Sheppard who struck a firm shot that took a touch off Gabuza and into the net.
Arrows had to play without suspended top scorer Collins Mbesuma but gave a successful debut to Elrio van Heerden, who completed the full 90 minutes in his first appearance in South African club football.
