CHIPPA UTD 1

2 GOLDEN ARROWS

Competition: PSL
Date: Wednesday, 03 April 2013
Venue: Phillipi Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows have come from behind to beat bottom side Chippa United 2-1 in their Absa Premiership clash at the Philippi Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday night.

Goals from Musa Bilankulu and Norman Smith handed victory to Abafana Bes’thende, who had fallen behind to Benjani Mwaruwari’s early goal.

Arrows had a wonderful opportunity to open the scoring inside the opening five minutes when a mix-up at the back presented on-loan Tshepo Liphoko with an open goal. The youngster skied his shot well high and wide.

But the first goal came at the other end. William Twala defence-splitting pass saw Benjani beat the offside trap and he rounded Nkosinathi Gumede in the Arrows goal to score.

Benjani should have had a second just minutes later when he again beat the offside trap, but this time a heavy touch allowed Gumede to gather when the Zimbabwean just had the keeper to beat.
Chippa were over-running the Arrows defence and Benjani crossed for Andile Mbenyane, who scuffed his shot with just the keeper to beat. Welcome Qalanto when shot over with Gumede out of position and the goal gaping.

Lucky Nguzana set Smith free on goal just before halftime, but the striker’s touch was heavy and Chippa goalkeeper Kassaly Daouda was able to make the save.

Chippa might have extended their lead seconds after the break when Twala cross from the left, but Joshua Sauls, on for the injured Benjani, missed the ball and Philani Dlamini scuffed his shot wide.

Arrows were level on 51 minutes and it was a simple goal too. Smith crossed to the centre and Bilankulu headed past a woefully exposed Daouda.

Sauls rounded Gumede soon afterwards, but Jabulani Nene tracked back brilliantly to block the shot on the line.

The visitors took the lead after Daouda could only parry Nguzana’s shot into the path of Smith, who scored from two yards out.

Arrows had some nervous moments in the closing stages, but were able to hold on for a win that puts some daylight between themselves and the sides at the bottom of the table.

Next up for Manqoba Mngqithi’s side is a home clash with Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
