GOLDEN ARROWS 1
0 SUPERSPORT UTD
Competition: PSL
Date: Wednesday, 23 April 2014
Venue: Princess Magogo Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30pm
Lamontville Golden Arrows’ hopes of staying in the Absa Premiership are still very much alive following a 1-0 win over SuperSport United at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday.
The only goal of the game was scored by Bongi Ntuli in the second half and Arrows are now just three points behind Free State Stars in the relegation play-off position, though they have played two games more.
But the win, and the clean-sheet, will be a huge boost in confidence for co-coaches Shaun Bartlett and Bheka Phakathi, as well as the players.
The win was no more than they deserved as well, Ntuli had twice gone close early on, first forcing a good save from visiting goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and then firing into the side-netting.
Philani Shange had a good chance to give the home team the lead when he broke the offside trap but put his effort wide, while SuperSport’s Thato Mokeke cleared the ball off the line to keep out Shange’s effort just before the break.
The goal finally did come on 65 minutes, as Ntuli controlled a pass from Zambian forward Chris Katongo before firing home from close range.
Arrows might have added to their lead as well as Nkanyiso Mngwengwe headed wide and Manti Moholo fired wide from close-range.
Both teams were denied by the woodwork in the closing stages as Sibusiso Khumalo and Rudolf Bester struck the frame of the goal.
Next up for Arrows is a Durban Derby away at AmaZulu on Monday, before they close their season with a home meeting against Orlando Pirates on May 10.
