Lamontville Golden Arrows got caught by an early goal and never had a chance to recover before going down 3-1 in their first game of the new year, away at Santos at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
Arrows got caught by a sucker punch in only the fourth minute when goalkeeper Helton da Rocha was caught off the line by a long range shot by Santos’ new boy Vuyisile Wana.
It meant the visiting side were on the back foot almost from the start and a second goal from the hosts added to Arrows’ woes.
A quick counter attack saw Wana set up Salmaan King, who chipped over Da Rocha to make it 2-0 after 32 minutes.
But the fighting spirit of the Durbanites was evident soon after as Siyabonga Nkosi pulled it back to 2-1 just five minutes later when he had time to turn and shoot inside the penalty area.
Arrows finished the half as the stronger side and looked set to fight their way back into the game after the interval but got caught again at an unexpected juncture when Wana’s pace set up another opportunity, with King heading home unmarked at the back post.
With Santos having restored their two-goal lead in the 57th minute, it left Arrows with a mountain to climb and despite the best efforts of both Collins Mbesuma and substitute Nkanyiso Mlotshwa, who each came close to finding the net, it proved a fruitless evening.
