GOLDEN ARROWS 3

0 MARITZBURG UTD

Competition: PSL
Date: Friday, 22 January 2010
Venue: Chatsworth Stadium
Kick-off: 15:30pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows claimed the bragging rights in the KwaZulu-Natal Derby for the second time in a week as they comprehensively defeated Maritzburg United 3-0 at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday.

The win means Abafana Bes’thende remain in seventh position in the table as goals from Collins Mbesuma, Nhlanhla Sithole and Njabulo Manqana sealed what was a comfortable win in the end. David Booysen was sent off late in the first half for United.

The game was played in extreme heat which made life difficult for the players and United’s Gert Schalkwyk had the first real chance of the game that was beaten away by Helton da Rocha in the home goal.

Manqana shot wide from long-range, while Norikazu Murakami saw his effort saved as the home side began to turn the screw.

Golden Arrows won a penalty on 20 minutes when Byrone Hendricks hand-balled in the area and Zambian hitman Mbesuma kept his cool to easily slot home from the spot, keeping up his recent run of scoring.

It was all the home side deserved and they continued to push forward with Mbesuma running the visiting defence ragged.

Maritzurg’s task was made even harder when defender Booysen was shown a straight red-card for a foul on Manqana and they would play out the remaining 51 minutes with 10 men.

Golden Arrows doubled their lead just after the break when Mbesuma found substitute Sithole, who had come on for the injured Siyabonga Nkosi just before halftime, in acres of space and he rifled home a rasping shot.

By now the home side were in complete control and monopolising possession. It was no surprise when they made it 3-0 midway through the second period as Manqana tried his luck from range and found the back of the net.

There were a few half-chances after that, but the scoreline remained the same to the end as Golden Arrows collected all three points. They now look forward to their next encounter, an away trip to Vasco da Gama next Friday.
