A dominant Lamontville Golden Arrows sealed their first Absa Premiership win of the season when they beat newly-promoted Vasco da Gama 2-0 at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
A brace from 23-year-old winger Nkanyiso Mlotshwa, his first goals for the club in just his second appearance since joining from Vodacom League side Island FC in the last transfer window, were enough to seal the points for Abafana Bes’thende.
The big news ahead of kick-off was the return to the side of Bafana Bafana centre-back Siyabonga Sangweni, who missed the loss to Kaizer Chiefs in the opening round due to a lack of match fitness.
There was an early scare for the home team when KwaZulu-Natal-born Sibusiso Zuma got a free-kick on target for Vasco, but Helton da Rocha in the home goal made the save.
SuperSport United loanee Masibusane Zongo went even closer for the Cape Town club as he hit the outside of the post with another free-kick minutes later.
Arrows were struggling to get a foothold in the first half and a lone Philani Shange effort from range was all they really had to show for their efforts.
But Zoran Filipovic’s side were much better in the second period and they were rewarded for their enterprising play when Mlotshwa scrambled home the first.
Vasco goalkeeper Jason Barnard failed to hold the cross and Mlotshwa reacted quickest to poke the ball home as Barnard and defender Mokete Tsotetsi could not clear.
Shange then had a great chance to double the advantage as he found himself one-on-one with the keeper midway through the second period, but Barnard this time pulled off a wonderful save.
But the scoreline was 2-0 on 67 minutes as Mlotshwa netted his second with a fine drive that left Barnard with no chance.
By this time the home side were rampant and although they could not find a third goal, the three points is reward enough for the side.
Arrows’ next fixture is a KwaZulu-Natal Derby against Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on September 17.
