Lamontville Golden Arrows conceded an early goal to Bloemfontein Celtic and went down by a single goal in their ABSA Premiership clash at Chatsworth on Saturday.
Hlompho Kekana scored the game’s only goal after 17 minutes to hand Celtic a rare away win.
The score line was not reflective of the chances created with Arrows taking 10 shots at goal to just four from Celtic.
Arrows also dominated the corner count with nine set pieces to just two for their opponents.
Abafana Bes’thende had several chance to fight their way back into the game, led by their centre back Siyabonga Sangweni, who just three days earlier was playing for Bafana Bafana.
He had a 73rd minute header from an in-swinging corner parried away by Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb and also missed with a late free kick opportunity.
Collins Mbesuma, who scored for Zambia in midweek, was unable to add to his glut of recent goals and taken off early in the second half. His replacement Thamsanqa Gabuza missed a golden chance four minutes from the end.
Saturday’s match marked a return to the starting line-up for winger Philane Shange.
It was a fourth successive defeat … and a fifth home loss of the season … for Arrows, who remain seventh in the Premier Soccer League standings with 25 points from 20 matches.
