Lamontville Golden Arrows have played to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Moroka Swallows in their Absa Premiership clash at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result ends a run of four straight losses for Abafana Bes’thende, who twice came from behind to claim a deserved point.

Koketso Mmotong gave Swallows the lead inside 60 seconds, before Philani Shange equalised for the home side. Siyabonga Nomvete put the visitors back in front, but Vusumuzi Vilakazi found a leveller again with 12 minutes to go.

Swallows got off to the perfect start when Mmotong volleyed home a set-piece to give the visitors the lead inside the first minute.

And it might have been 2-0 just a few minutes later when Cheick Cisse was put through on goal by a brilliant Macbeth Sibaya pass, but some excellent defending from Arrows’ Bafana Bafana centre-back Siyabonga Sangweni kept the Malien striker at bay.

Musa Bilankulu saw his powerful header well saved by Greg Etafia in the Swallows goal as Abafana Bes’thende began to find their rhythm after the shock of going behind so early.

Excellent play from Arrows’ Zambian hitman Collins Mbesuma, playing against his former employers, saw him get a shot away that was blocked by the Georgian defender Giorgi Nergadze, while Etafia did brilliantly to deny Sangweni’s header.

But the goal the home side deserved arrived on 35 minutes when Shange netted with a low drive from a Siyanda Zwane cross to make the scoreline 1-1.

Arrows almost took the lead just before halftime when Sibaya was forced to clear Mvuzukile Tom’s header off the goal-line, and then Mbesuma combined with Siyabonga Nkosi to create a chance, but Etafia saved his shot.

Swallows created the first real chance of the second half as Sibaya forced Khuzwayo into a world-class save from 25-yards, but 10 minutes later the visitors were ahead.

Nomvete powered home header on 65 minutes to make the scoreline 2-1, somewhat against the run of play it has to be said.

Sangweni then had to be smart to deny Oscar Machapa with Khuzwayo beaten, while Nomvete put his header from a Lefa Tsutsulupa header onto the woodwork, with the ball bouncing away to safety.

But the home side got the goal their play deserved as substitute Vilakazi, on the pitch for just three minutes, tapped the ball home to make it 2-2.
Musa Bilankulu had a chance to win it for the home side when he found himself with just Etafia to beat, but the defender put his shot wide and the match ended as a stalemate.

Arrows’ next encounter is away to relegation threatened Mpumalanga Black Aces on Sunday, February 27.
