Lamontville Golden Arrows have succumbed to a 3-2 defeat to BidVest Wits in their Absa Premiership encounter at the BidVest Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Joseph Musonda and Musa Bilankulu scored the goals for Abafana Bes’thende, while Bongolwethu Jayiya, Stanton Fredericks (penalty) and Ryan Chapman netted for the Clever Boys. Golden Arrows also had Philani Shange sent-off late on for dissent.

Coach Zoran Filipovic kept faith with 22-year-old goalkeeper Siphamandla Ntombela ahead of Thulasizwe Khuzwayo, but was still without the services of Bafana Bafana left-back Mzuvukile Tom.

Siyabonga Nkosi almost gave Golden Arrows the perfect start when his header came back off the upright, but the visitors were ahead on 13 minutes.

Derrick Spencer fouled Collins Mbesuma and from the resultant free-kick delivered by Shange, Musonda bundled the ball home.

Ntombela produced a fine save to deny Bongolwethu Jayiya, but the red-hot Wits striker did have his side level just the half-hour mark when he scored with a fine finish.

The teams traded opportunities for the remainder of the half, but remained tied at the break after an exciting and free-flowing first half.

Match referee Abdul Ebrahim left the field with a muscle injury shortly into the first half to be replaced by fourth official Arthur Gabela, which would later turn out to be a crucial development.

Jayiya and Sifiso Vilakazi had efforts well saved by Ntombela, while Bilankulu shot just wide for Golden Arrows.

It looked as though the visitors would hold on for a point, before Wits were awarded a penalty on 88 minutes by Gabela after an alleged handball by Golden Arrows substitute Thamsanqa Gabuza.

The award incensed the Abafana Bes’thende players and while Joseph Musonda received a yellow card for dissent, Shange took his protestations too far and was given a red.

Chapman scored a third for The Clever Boys three minutes into injury time to make the points safe, though Golden Arrows did pull a goal back through Bilankulu just before the final whistle, after he was set up by Vusumuzi Vilakazi.
