Lamontville Golden Arrows moved up to third in the Absa Premiership with a 3-1 victory over the 10-men of Mpumalanga Black Aces at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The home side displayed sparkling football at times as goals from Siyabonga Nkosi, Joseph Musonda and a maiden strike from Sphesihle Nzimande earned all three points. The League’s top scorer, Mpho Maleka of Black Aces, netted a consolation for his side.
Golden Arrows got off to the best possible start as Bafana Bafana international Nkosi scored inside three minutes.
Nzimande floated over a corner and the ball made its way to Nkosi, who fired home to give Denis Onyango in the visitors’ goal no chance.
Black Aces had some early moments of pressure and but for stout defending from Siyanda Zwane and Siyabonga Sangweni, might have found some reward. They had a goal rightly ruled out for offside as well, as the visitors sought to bring themselves back into the game.
Helton da Rocha produced a magnificent save from Joseph Henyekane’s shot, but it was the home side who extended their lead on 39 minutes. Excellent interplay from Musonda and Philani Shange saw the former get his shot away and make the score 2-0.
Black Aces’ afternoon went from bad to worse early in the second half when defender Nicolas Killas received a straight red card for a professional foul after he was adjudged to be the last man when he brought down Shange.
The game was over as a contest when Golden Arrows scored their third, and it was moment to savour for Nzimande, who received an inch-perfect pass from Nkosi and found the back of the net.
Nkosi and Nzimande had further chances to add to the scoreline, but it was Black Aces who gave themselves a glimmer of hope as the in-form Maleka scored with 20 minutes to play. He collected an Aka pass and beat Da Rocha with ease.
Da Rocha then made a brilliant save from Henyekane’s free-kick, but the final chance of the game fell to Golden Arrows substitute Songwe Chalwe, whose tame shot was easily saved by Onyango when he might have done better.
Abafana Bes’thende can now look forward to their next Absa Premiership fixture, away to Platinum Stars on November 28.
