GOLDEN ARROWS 0

3 BLOEM CELTIC

Competition: PSL
Date: Saturday, 13 August 2011
Venue: King Zwelithini Stadium
Kick-off: 18:00pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows’ 2011/12 Absa Premiership season got off to a disappointing start as they lost 3-0 at home to Bloemfontein Celtic at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.

Abafana Bes’thende fielded new signings Katlego Mashego and Dillon Sheppard from the start, but after weathering an early storm, the away side gradually took a grip on the game.

Celtic took the lead through former Golden Arrows winger Thokozani Mshengu, who was outstanding throughout, before Zambian international Clifford Mulenga scored a quick-fire brace at the start of the second half.

Debutante Mashego had the first shot of the game as he drilled a 35-yard effort wide, before putting a header off target too.

Siyabonga Nkosi then shot over for Golden Arrows, before Celtic’s Eric Mathoho blocked another effort from the lively Mashego.

Hlompho Kekana might have done better for Celtic when he shot over the bar after being teed-up by Mshengu, and home goalkeeper Helton da Rocha made a fine finger-tip save from a Prince Hlela effort.

Mshengu did find the game’s opening goal on 33 minutes though as he struck an unstoppable shot on the half-volley from the edge of the area after a flick-on from Mulenga to put Celtic into the lead.

Da Rocha was forced into a fine save from Moses Spandeel five minutes later, with the latter having another opportunity as well that he put wide, and Mulenga then shot over as Celtic began to create opportunities.

Mulenga scored Celtic’s second five minutes after halftime as the home defence sat off him and invited the shot from 35-yards, which left Da Rocha with no chance.

And the Zambian netted his second of the night when he was played into space on the left, rounded Da Rocha, and squeezed the shot home from a tight angle.

The home side found opportunities few and far between after that, Nkosi fired over the bar, Mashego forced a good save from Patrick Tigyemb and Collins Mbesuma had a snap-shot go narrowly wide.

Substitute Thamsanqa Gabuza also forced another good save from Celtic’s Cameroon goalkeeper, who also adjusted well to save a deflected free-kick from Mbesuma.
