Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered the disappointment of semifinal defeat in the Telkom Knockout competition after losing 3-1 to Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.
Abafana Bes’thende started the match the better and took the lead through on-loan Pirates player Robyn Johannes, but three defensive errors cost them after that and they succumbed to the visiting Bucs side.
The atmosphere at the Moses Mabhida Stadium was electric for the game and the match as a whole was a superb advert for South African soccer.
Pirates almost took the lead on 20 minutes as Benni McCarthy launched a header that beat Helton da Rocha in the home goal, but came back off the crossbar.
Golden Arrows were ahead on 31 minutes though with an excellently worked goal from Johannes. He played a neat one-two with Dillon Sheppard and as Pirates defender Rooi Mahamutsa allowed him to run on, provided a neat finish past Moeneeb Josephs.
The lead lasted just eight minutes though as Pirates hit back. A corner was only half-cleared and as the shot from the edge of the area came back into the box, Siyabonga Sangweni, who left Arrows for Pirates at the start of this season, turned the ball home.
Johannes had played the defender onside by not stepping up and despite muted protestations from the home players, the goal stood.
Bucs were ahead on 71 minutes through another defensive error and fullback Mzuvukile Tom and keeper Da Rocha had a mix-up at the back after Daine KLate had charged down the former’s clearance and Thulasizwe Mbuyane was left with the simplest of finishes to score.
The game was over as a contest when Pirates scored their third from the penalty-spot with seven minutes left to play.
Sheppard was adjudged to have fouled Lekgwathi in the penalty-area and Manyisa converted from the spot to put the visitors out of sight.
Worse still, Sheppard received a second yellow card for the incident and had to watch the remainder of the match from the stands.
