Lamontville Golden Arrows recorded their fourth win of the Absa Premiership season with a 2-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.
It is a notable scalp for Abafana Bes’thende, with Swallows having gone into the round of fixtures in fourth position and one of the form sides in the top-flight.
But goals from Thamsanqa Gabuza and Thanduyise Khuboni, a penalty, paved the way for success for Muhsin Ertugral’s side. They have now won three of their last four games in all competitions and look to have turned the corner after a difficult start to the campaign.
Swallows made a bright start with Helton da Rocha in the home goal having to be alert to keep out efforts from Lerato Chabangu, Oscar Machapa and Siyabonga Nomvete.
But Abafana Bes’thende had the lead two minutes before the break as right-back Siyanda Zwane crossed for striker Gabuza to convert.
That goal was just before the break and soon after the restart the home side doubled their advantage from the penalty-spot.
Georgian midfielder Giorgi Nergadze fouled Collins Mbesuma in the area and it was a clear penalty. Golden Arrows skipper Khuboni kept his nerve to beat Greg Etafia with the resultant set-piece.
The home side were able to comfortably hold on for the three points with little danger at their end for arguably their best win of the season so far.
Golden Arrows now look forward to the weekend trip to BidVest Wits on Saturday as they seek to end 2011 on high with a run of wins that could take them into the top half of the table.
