Lamontville Golden Arrows finished 2011 on a low note with a 2-0 Absa Premiership loss to defending champions Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
Abafana Bes’thende gave a good account of themselves and were a little unlucky not to get something from the game, with home goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs in inspired form.
As it was, goals from Isaac Chansa and Tokelo Rantie gave The Buccaneers the points going into the long break in action for the festive season and the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Golden Arrows coach Muhsin Ertugral gave young goalkeeper Nkosi Gumede a first PSL start, the 18-year-old coming in for the injured Helton da Rocha after excelling as a substitute against Ajax Cape Town at the weekend.
The first half was devoid of chances at either end as both sides fail to find the right ball in the final third of the pitch.
The visitors should have been ahead 10 minutes into the second half when Collins Mbesuma supplied an inch-perfect ball for Thamsanqa Gabuza, but the striker somehow missed the target with the goal gaping.
And just a few minutes later Pirates were ahead when Daine Klate crossed from the left and Chansa got in front of the defender to score with his head.
Golden Arrows pressed for an equaliser, but were reduced to long-range efforts, with Siyabonga Nkosi blasting over from the edge of the area.
The visitors went much closer soon afterwards though as Dillon Sheppard fired in a superb free-kick that forced a spectacular save from Moeneeb Josephs in the Pirates goal.
The Buccaneers got their second with seven minutes remaining when Rantie beat the offside trap from a free-kick and volleyed the ball home with a lovely finish.
Katlego Mashego forced another good save from Josephs with a low drive, before pulling off another fine stop deny an Arrows player with a header at the death.
Golden Arrows’ next fixture is away to Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday, February 15.
