Kick-off: 19:30pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered a 1-0 defeat at 10-man Platinum Stars in their Absa Premiership clash at the Moruleng Stadium on Wednesday night.

Abafana Bes’thende had much of the ball, but could not force it home on the night, despite playing for 51 minutes with a numerical advantage following the sending off of Ntsikelani Nyauza for a reckless challenge.

The only goal of the game was scored by Stars’ winger Thuso Phala, with the result now taking Dikwena above Golden Arrows in the table.

Ex-Stars midfielder Dillon Sheppard narrowly failed to connect with Thanduyise Khuboni’s cross for the first real chance of the game for the visitors.

Robyn Johannes fired into the side-netting from Sheppard’s corner, while at the other end Phala was agonizingly close to connecting with a pass when he would have been left with just Andre Petim to beat.

Musa Bilankulu headed over from another fine Sheppard delivery from a set-piece, while Henrico Botes went close for Dikwena from Phala’s pass. Soon afterwards Nyauza fired straight at the goalkeeper when one-on-one with Petim.

The home side began to dominate possession and Joseph Molangoane missed an excellent chance when he put the ball wide with the goal gaping.

But Stars were reduced to 10 men on 39 minutes when Nyauza’s reckless challenge on Thamsanqa Mkhize drew a red card, his second in consecutive matches.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, it was the home team who took the lead when Phala converted from Botes’ pass five minutes after the break.

Robert Ng’ambi headed just over the bar from a Vuyo Mere cross, before Jackson Mabokgwane made an excellent save to deny Katlego Mashego’s rasping drive.

Golden Arrows were now pushing forward in numbers on search of an equaliser and Mabokgwane did brilliantly again to save from Mashego’s free-kick.

Try as they might, Muhsin Ertugral’s men could not find a leveller in the closing stage though and they now look forward to a home meeting with Maritzburg United in the KwaZulu-Natal Derby on Saturday evening.
