Lamontville Golden Arrows have recorded just their second-ever victory over Santos in Cape Town with an excellent 2-1 success at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
The win moves Abafana Bes’thende into 11th place on the table and nine points clear of the relegation play-off positions as coach Muhsin Ertugral steered his side to a superb away win over one of his former teams.
The goals for the away side came from Siyabonga Nkosi and Thamsanqa Gabuza, while Neo Segalo netted for Santos.
The home team were unfortunate not to grab the lead when Matthew Pattison’s shot crashed against the crossbar on 25 minutes, but just four minutes later Golden Arrows were ahead.
Elrio van Heerden’s excellent free-kick was flicked-on by Nkosi passed the helpless Pa Dembo Touray for the 1-0 lead.
Santos were level seven minutes before the break when excellent play from Erwin Isaacs set up youngster Segalo to score his first senior goal from eight-yards.
Eleazar Rodgers saw his shot for the home side brilliantly cleared off the line, but the winner would eventually come at the other end.
Gabuza drilled in a fierce effort from outside the penalty-area that left Touray with no chance and stunned the hosts.
Santos poured forward in search of an equalizer before the end, but some excellent, resolute defence kept them at bay, as well as the reflexes of young goalkeeper Nkosi Gumede.
The win was a third in four matches for Arrows, whose next match is home to Kaizer Chiefs next Wednesday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
