Lamontville Golden Arrows have weathered a storm and earned a deserved point after holding Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to a 0-0 draw at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.
The hosts created numerous opportunities to score, but superb defending from Abafana Bes’thende, as well as more great goalkeeping from youngster Nkosi Gumede, kept The Brazilians at bay.
The opening 20 minutes was even in terms of chances, Katlego Mashego shooting wide after a minute when well placed.
Sundowns struck the crossbar midway through the half as Nyasha Mushekwi’s header from an Anthony Laffor corner thundered against the woodwork and away to safety.
Two minutes later and Mushekwi had another chance, finding himself one-on-one with Golden Arrows goalkeeper Gumede, who did just enough to put him off.
Elias Pelembe was booked just before halftime for a blatant piece of simulation, before Katlego Mphela headed wide in the second period.
Sundowns hit the woodwork for the second time in the game when Hlompho Kekana unleashed a thunderous effort that was kept out by the frame of the goal.
And Mushekwi missed with a header soon afterwards after a great ball from Doctor Mampuru as the home side began to apply heavy pressure on the Golden Arrows goal.
Surprise Moriri and Siyanda Xulu then both had headed efforts miss the target, but the visitors’ defence stood firm to the end.
Coach Muhsin Ertugral can now build towards the Absa Premiership clash with Free State Stars at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday. That match has a 15h00 kick-off.
