A late flurry of goals helped Lamontville Golden Arrows to a 3-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos in their Absa Premiership clash at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday evening.
Dillon Sheppard opened the scoring for the home side, but Tshepo Tomanyane equalised for the visitors. However, Thanduyise Khuboni and Collins Mbesuma scored late on to give Golden Arrows the win.
Abafana Bes’thende were heavy favourites going into the match, not just because of their superior League standing, but also the fact that they had won five of the last six matches between the two and not conceded a goal in that time.
In fact, the Durban side had also never lost a home game to Ezenkosi, so the cards were stacked in their favour going into the game.
Cosmos striker Alton Meiring had a shot from range that tested the palms of home goalkeeper Nkosi Gumede, but it was Golden Arrows who took the lead.
Sheppard is having an excellent season at the club and after being teed-up by Mbesuma, he blasted the ball home midway through the first half.
Siyabonga Nontshinga curled his shot narrowly wide of the goal as the visitors sought an immediate response.
There was then a moment of controversy as Golden Arrows coach Muhsin Ertugral was sent to the stands by referee Gabriel Sekopo, presumably for something he said.
And Cosmos were level 15 minutes into the second period when Tomanyane found the back of the net, slightly against the run of play, after converting Bamuza Sono’s cross.
Siyabonga Nkosi saw his free-kick well-saved by Avril Phali in the visitors’ goal and it looked as though the game may be heading for a draw.
But two minutes from time the home side were awarded a penalty and skipper Khuboni kept his cool to slot the ball home.
There was still time for one more goal as Mbesuma got his name on the scoresheet, showing great strength to hold off a defender and convert the chance.
Golden Arrows now look forward to their next Absa Premiership encounter, away at Moroka Swallows on April 29.
