Lamontville Golden Arrows picked up their first win of the new Absa Premiership season when they defeated Platinum Stars 3-1 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Stars came into the game off the back of two wins in their opening three matches, against Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic, while Abafana Bes’thende were still looking for their first point of the campaign.

But the home side dominated proceedings almost from start to finish and deserved the three points as a brace from Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma, his first goals of the season, and a late header from Musa Bilankulu saw them to victory.

It took a while for the game to spark into life but the first chance of the match fell to Jabulani Nene, who might have done better with Mbesuma’s cross.

Five minutes later and the home side were ahead though as Philani Shange was upended in the area by JJ Mpangase and the referee pointed to the spot.

Mbesuma’s first effort was saved by debutante Stars goalkeeper Etame Soppo, but a retake was ordered for encroaching by the keeper and the forward netted with his second attempt.
Two minutes later and Stars had a spot-kick of their own as Thuso Phala was pushed by Bilankulu, but home goalkeeper Virgil Vries saved Henrico Botes’ effort.

Bilankulu wasted a great headed chance early in the second half, but Golden Arrows were 2-0 up on the hour-mark. Mzivukile Tom’s excellent run down flank saw him cross for Mbesuma, who had his back to goal, but picked his spot to score.

The Zambian could have had his hat-trick with 20 minutes to go but Soppo saved his well-placed shot.
Bilankulu put the icing on the cake with a third in the closing stages as he headed home Njabulo Manqana’s cross.
Stars pulled one back in the dying stages as Zimbabwean forward Terrence Mandaza opened his account for the season after being set up by fellow substitute Lindokuhle Mbatha.

Golden Arrows will now take plenty of confidence into their next Absa Premiership encounter away to fellow KwaZulu-Natal side Maritzburg United on Sunday.
