Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Santos in their Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Saturday evening.

Goals from Ricardo Skippers, Vuyisile Wana and Salmaan King handed the Cape Town club the three points, while Abafana Bes’thende had to be content with a consolation from Thamsanqa Gabuza.

The visitors were ahead on 11 minutes when winger Jonathan Armogam floated in a lovely cross for Skippers to head home as the home defence stood static.

Santos were seeing most of the ball and Golden Arrows coach Ernst Middendorp decided to change things up, bringing on Thamsanqa Gabuza for Katlego Mashego midway through the first half.

But just four minutes later and the home side fell further behind as the speedy Wana collected a Tawonga Chimodzi pass and fired home.

Golden Arrows did start creating more chances though and only some stout Santos defending managed to keep them at bay before the halftime whistle.

Virgil Vries did well to save from Erwin Isaacs just after the break, while Njabulo Manqana put his free-kick over the bar at the other end.

Visiting goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng then did remarkably well to save from Philani Shange in what was a stunning effort from the gloveman.

By now the home side were applying all the pressure, but chances were still few and far between, despite plenty of balls being put into the box.

But the pressure finally did toll, though Santos almost escaped conceding. Collins Mbesuma was fouled by Wayne Arendse in the box, but the big Zambian striker saw his penalty saved by the brilliant Motsoeneng.

However, from the resultant corner-kick delivered by Manqana, Gabuza netted to bring the scoreline back to 2-1 and set up a grand-stand finish.

But it was Santos who found the next goal as substitute King latched onto a Wana cross to score and seal the points for the visitors.

Siyabonga Nkosi and Mbesuma both had chances late in the game, but neither could change the scoreline for Middendorp’s team.

Golden Arrows next fixture is away at Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday, before a long international break for Bafana Bafana’s 2012 Africa Cup of Nations clash against Sierra Leone..
