1 MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
Date: Saturday, 15 October 2011
Venue: King Zwelithini Stadium
Lamontville Golden Arrows have held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.
It was a positive start for new coach Muhsin Ertugral, who watched as Elias Pelembe gave Sundowns the lead, only for Musa Bilankulu to equalise soon afterwards.
Golden Arrows finished the game with 10 men after Dillon Sheppard received his marching orders for two bookable offences and will be pleased with the point gained.
The match was played in wet conditions in Durban which did not help the players with their footing, but the early chances fell to the visitors at Katlego Mphela, Surprise Moriri and Pelembe all had shots on goal.
The visitors were lucky when Sibusiso Khumalo cleared off the line midway through the first half as Abafana Bes’thende began to apply some pressure on the Sundowns goal.
The home side were dealt a blow on 40 minutes when Katlego Mashego was forced off through injury, to be replaced by Philani Shange, and Ertugral will hope the former Bafana Bafana star will not be out for too long.
Mphela then shot wide after being picked out by Pelembe as the first half drew to a close with chances few and far between.
There was a brief hold-up in the game on 49 minutes when two of the floodlights failed at the stadium, but after the resumption Siyabonga Nkosi went close for the home side when he forced a save from Wayne Sandilands.
But it was the visitors who took the lead when Pelembe netted with a brilliant shot from the edge of the area that arrowed into the top corner of the net.
The lead lasted just three minutes though as Bilankulu equalised with a header from Nkosi’s corner for his third goal in eight games this season.
Thamsanqa Gabuza had a superb opportunity to put Golden Arrows ahead when he found himself one-on-one with Sandilands, but he put his effort wide.
There was disappointment for the home side towards the end of the game as Dillon Sheppard received two yellow cards in just a few minutes to leave the home side to finish the match with 10 men.
Golden Arrows will take confidence from the performance as they look forward to their Telkom Knockout first round clash with SuperSport United on Tuesday, October 25.
