SUPERSPORT UTD 0
1 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Telkom Cup
Date: Tuesday, 25 October 2011
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30pm
A brilliant burst down the wing and a typically tight finish ensured success for Lamontville Golden Arrows as they upset the form book to eliminate league leaders SuperSport United from the Telkom Knockout.
Collins Mbesuma forced the ball over the line after 21 minutes to see Arrows through to the quarter-finals in early November.
It came after a forceful run from right back Siyanda Zwane, who sped down the wing before passing to Siyabonga Nkosi.
He in turn provided the perfect square pass for Mbesuma to squeeze the ball over the line.
It marks the first win for the side since the arrival of new coach Muhsin Ertugral.
Arrows are also the first side to win an away game in the first round of this year’s Telkom Knockout and will now go into the quarter-final draw on Thursday.
SuperSport had several patches of dominance with strong wing play but never forced Helton da Rocha into any serious saves. Instead they threatened but missed with their chances.
Arrows played clever counter attack game and oftentimes had chances to add to their goal.
Substitutes Njabulo Manqana and Thamsanqa Gabuza had good chances to extend the lead in the second half while Mbesuma might have had a hat trick.
He went close after stealing the ball from the defenders in the 75th minute and soon after ran some 50 metres before shooting narrowly over the top.
