Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered a 1-0 loss to AmaZulu in their KwaZulu-Natal Derby played at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening.
The only goal of the game was scored by Ayanda Dlamini on the hour-mark to give Usuthu all three points as Abafana Bes’thende missed a number of chances to score.
Coach Manqoba Mngithi kept faith with much of the sides that did duty in the 2-0 victory over University of Pretoria on Wednesday.
After a fast start from both sides, Ayanda Dlamini headed over from Njabulo Manqana’s cross, while at the other end Thansanqa Gabuza forced a good save from Tapuwa Kapini.
Manqana, who played for Golden Arrows before leaving for Orlando Pirates in January 2012, then fired over when he really should have hit the target.
Ayanda Dlamini then had two chances in quick succession, first firing over from close-range and then seeing his effort saved by the excellent Pavels Steinbors.
Gabuza did well to work himself some space for a short early in the second half but fired wide, and minutes later AmaZulu were ahead.
Ayanda Dlamini’s cross-cum-shot floated into the net with Steinbors unable to keep it out.
Arrows were almost level straight away when on-loan Orlando Pirates midfielder Tshepo Liphoko saw his cross brush the crossbar.
The home side almost stole a point in injury-time when Kapini pulled off a brilliant save to deny Masonwabe Bovu.
Next up for Arrows is a trip to Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, before they take on Gauteng third-tier side Vardos FC in the Nedbank Cup next Saturday.
