MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 1

0 GOLDEN ARROWS

Competition: Nedbank Cup
Date: Friday, 15 March 2013
Venue: Loftus Versfeld
Kick-off: 20:00pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows can count themselves desperately unlucky after a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in their Nedbank Cup Last 16 clash at Loftus Stadium on Friday night.

Abfana Bes’thende struck the woodwork three times in the match and dominated large parts of the game, but ended up losing to a late Anthony Laffor goal for the home side

Manqoba Mngqithi’s team were not helped by a red card for Masonwabe Bovu early in the second half that meant they had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.
A terrible mistake by Wayne Sandilands in the home goal gave Thamsanqa Gabuza an early chance, but the striker’s shot took a deflection and went out for a corner.

Jabulani Nene had an effort on goal that was easily saved by Sandilands, but the keeper had to work harder as he pushed Tshepo Liphoko’s fantastic effort onto the frame of the goal.
Abafana Bes’thende were certainly the brighter side and Bongi Ntuli and Nene had further efforts that were deflected behind.

Sundowns midfielder Samuel Julies was next to try his luck, but his goal-bound effort was also blocked for a corner.

Golden Arrows hit the frame of the goal again just before halftime, Gabuza this time the unlucky player as he beat Sandilands but not the post.

The visitors were dealt a blow early in the second half when Bovu received his marching orders, leaving the side to play almost the entire second period with 10 men.

Golden Arrows still had their chances though and hit the woodwork for a third time in the game – this time Gift Sithole rattling the crossbar with a header.

But the decisive moment of the match came on 81 minutes, Liberian international Laffor showing great composure to score and break the hearts of the visitors.

Next up for Golden Arrows is a home match with BidVest wits in the Absa Premiership on March 30.
