MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 2
0 GOLDEN ARROWS
Date: Wednesday ,05 February 2014
Venue: Loftus Stadium
Lamontville Golden Arrows have resumed their Absa Premiership campaign in 2014 with a 2-0 loss at title-chasing Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.
Abafana Bes’thende had little luck in the Loftus Stadium encounter, where goals in each half gifted Sundowns the victory.
Khama Billiat and Anthony Laffor were on the scoresheet for the home side, while Manti Moholo received his marching orders on debut for Arrows.
Moholo was one of four players to make their debut for Mark Harrison’s side on the night. The others were fellow Orlando Pirates loanee William Twala, Ghana defender Seth Owuso, and Namibia international Dean Hotto. But unfortunately for them it was more of the same as luck deserted Arrows on the night.
They fell behind to a Billiat header on 10 minutes when he was left unmarked to power the ball home from 12 yards following a cross by Bryce Moon. Twala went close soon afterwards, while Bongani Ntuli also shot narrowly wide.
But Sundowns increased their advantage after the break when Laffor scored, though the goal had more than a hint of offside. Elias Pelembe’s shot took a slight touch off a teammate and fell to Laffor at the back-post who stabbed the ball home, but the vital deflection appeared to come with him standing in an offside position.
Referee Daniel Bennett saw nothing wrong though and the goal stood, with Arrows’ nigh getting even worse 15 minutes later. Debutante Moholo picked up his second yellow card to leave the visitors to play out the final 25 minutes with 10 men.
They could not work themselves back into the game and will now look forward to Saturday’s encounter at home to Polokwane City.
