Lamontville Golden Arrows’ 14-season stay in the Absa Premiership came to an end on Wednesday when they were defeated 1-0 by AmaZulu in the Durban Derby at the Princess Magogo Stadium.
The defeat leaves Abafana Bes’thende stranded five points adrift at the bottom of the table with just one round of matches to play and means there will be no final day heroics when Orlando Pirates visit on Saturday.
Ayanda Dlamini scored the only goal of the game with nine minutes remaining, but as it turns out only a win would have done for Arrows, who battled gamely but were wasteful in front of goal.
Chris Katongo might have had a hat-trick on another night, while Bongi Ntuli and Thanduyise Khuboni were also unfortunate not to score.
In many ways it summed up the campaign for the side, on top in the game for large parts of the match, but unable to turn their dominance into a winning position.
When the side finally did have the ball in the back of the net, Ntuli’s effort was ruled out for offside.
The goal arrived for the home side late on and took the fight out of the visitors, Dlamini heading home from Rudzaigh Gamildien’s corner.
Arrows will say farewell to the top-flight for now when they entertain Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
