Abafana Bes’thende have played to a 1-all draw against Witbank Spurs this afternoon at Puma Stadium.

The fist half of the game was a stalemate, with both teams fighting to find a break in defense and score.

Early on in the first half it was Golden Arrows who had a free kick that was taken by Fikizolo, but it never had enough to beat the keeper, who held on. This seemed to push a button with Spurs, who immediately went on the attack and found themselves one on one with Mbaeva, who had a brilliant save to deny the home team from opening their account.

The remainder of the half seemed to be a battle of posession and defense. Each team taking the ball up quickly when in posession and trying their hardest to find a break and get one past the keeper. Fikizolo and Nxumalo had an opportuinity when they skilfully played the ball upfield, Fikizolo took the shot, but a very good save from Witbank Spurs goalkeeper, denied the visitors the opportunity and the teams went into the changerooms with no score on the board at all.

The second half of the game continued to be a battle of proportions. Witbank Spurs game plan was clear to defend, defend, defend, and if the opportunity arrises, try and score. This was evident, as Golden Arrows bombarded them in the last 22m of field and it was here that Spurs were on top form. Anything that was thrown at them, was defended.

76 minutes in Golden Arrows had a break through, when Khenyeza scored off a long throw in from Sikhakhane. The defence was broken and Abafana Bes’thende took the uppper hand in the game. The lead was short lived, and Witbank Spurs equaised 5 minutes after when a long ball into the Golden Arrows box was chipped in.

Abafana Bes’thende made a number of last minute attempts. Khenyeza had a crack which came off the post and was saved on the line after hitting the posts, and Nxumalo put one past the keeper, but was judged offsides by the officials.

Its now off to play Baroka on Wednesday at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
