Abafana Bes’thende have secured a 3-1 win over Free State Stars at Goble Park in Bethlehem this afternoon.

Lamontville Golden Arrows started the half strong and went straight into the attack mode, with Mahachi looking to try and open the scoring for the team within the first 3 minutes of the game. Although a bit scrappy at times, with both teams conceding a number of free kicks for an number of different offenses.

Both teams tried to make the most of their possession, and each had a number of shots at goal, but Hotto managed to take advantage and take a first half lead for the team when Free State Stars keeper’s clearing kick landed at his feet, a swift volley ensued and found its way to the back of the net. A huge psychological advantage going into the break for the team.

This was evident on the return to the field after the break, with Abafana Bes’thende stealing Free State Stars thunder, and attacking at will, working well on countering Stars at every turn. Again, the confidence was evident as Mahachi, Hotto and Shitolo took the ball up field using the width to their advantage, and eventually creating a situation that saw Shitolo unmarked in the box. A cross to him saw the second goal being scored for the afternoon.

Lamontville Golden Arrows grew in confidence from this point and closed down Free State Stars at every turn, taking possession of the ball and counter attacking at will.

They suffered a minor blow when a Free State Stars player was bought down in the box, and the referee deemed the tackle dangerous, awarding the home team a penalty, which was converted by Sekola.

Abafana Bes’thende go into a mid-week game against Ajax Cape Town on the back of two wins. This and the fact that it’s a home game is sure to be a positive aspects for Abafana Bes’thende. Get to King Zwelethini Stadium and get behind the boys in their midweek fixture. Which takes place on Wednesday night, 13 January, kick off at 18:00.
