Abafana Bes’thende have broken their losing streak with a well played 2-1 win over Polokwane City this evening at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The game was explosive from the start with the 3 points being an important haul for each side as it would catapult them back into the top half of the log. This elevated the tempo of the game from the offset and both teams were eager to open the scoring and try to put the opposition on the back-foot both mentally and physically.

Polokwane City made their breakthrough in the 7th minute when Thobani Mncwango opened the account for the team with a well struck left foot shot, that found the back of the net. This gave them the upper hand, however Clinton Larsen’s charges were proving they were not taking the game lying down. The reminder of the half saw Abafana Bes’thende take 9 shots at goal, 7 being on target. All that was need was for one to get past the keeper.

In the 44th minute, the determination paid off. A well placed cross from S Dube saw Shitolo head the ball past Polokwane City’s keeper to equalise going into the break.

This set the pace for the second half, both sides were looking to break the defence and take the lead. Each attacked hard, from all positions on the field and calculated their set pieces in the attempt to take control of the game. Larsen, already having made some changes to the side, was about to replace Mhango with Ramagalela, but instead took Fikizolo off. With his first touch of the ball Ramagalela took Lamontville Golden Arrows 1 goal up in the game.

It was hardly plain sailing from there until the full time whistle, Polokwane City fought back hard to try and equalise, especially in the dying minutes when they had two well directed attempts which were well saved by Mbaeva.

The team return to Durban for the week and then travel again next weekend to Lucas Moripe Stadium where they meet Mamelodi Sundowns.
