Lamontville Golden Arrows have lost to Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium in a heated KZN Derby match tonight.

Both teams came onto the pitch with fiery attitudes, and this could be seen in the first 15 minutes of play, as they bombarded each other’s goal areas in aggressive attacking movements. The home side attacked Golden Arrows goals heavily and in the first 40 minutes made it clear on their intent to score.

Golden Arrows responded in the same manner and both sides seemed level pegged in all aspects of the game as they went into the change rooms with neither side having managed to break the defence and get the ball into the back of the net.

The frustrations were clearly visible in the second half as the sides returned to the park. Both Abafana Bes’thende and The team of choice made substitutions from the change room, looking for that added edge to break the stale mate. The frustration however bubbled onto the pitch and the players got physical on more than one occasion as they fought it out for tonight’s honours.

Maritzburg made the break through however in the 53rd minute as their captain Lentjies found the back of the net to put the home side in the lead. Arrows attempted everything to pull one back but again the home side scored off substitute Anas in the 72nd and sealed the first home win for Maritzburg this season.

Abafana Bes’thende have a week to consolidate and prepare for their game against SuperSport United next Saturday at Chatsworth Stadium. Kick-off at 15:30
