Baroka FC have halted Lamontville Golden Arrows advance in the 2016 Nedbank Cup after beating the home side 2-0 at Chatsworth Stadium this afternoon.
After a blistering start by Lamontville Golden Arrows that saw them attack the goals of the visiting team on a number of occasions, with Sibiya hitting the woodwork, all seemed to fall to pieces for the side after Baroka FC were awarded a questionable penalty after Bilankulu apparently unfairly bought a player down in the box.
The visiting side took the shot, scoring, but the referee called for it to be taken again after players encroached the box area. Baroka’s player took the second shot, which Goss saved, but only parried the ball away and Baroka took advantage of the rebound and took a 1-0 lead going into the break.
Lamontville Golden Arrows returned to the field for the second half looking confident but once again were not able to convert the many chances they had. They had a number of opportunities, with Sibiya, Sikhakhane and Hotto making ground up field but nothing that was placed up in the last third looked like it would upset the visiting team.
Arrows were put further on the back foot in later in the half when Baroka once again attacked the goals, and beat Goss after he parried another shot away to the boot of an attacking player, who made sure of the second opportunity and sealed the fate for the home team in this year’s cup competition.
We now shift our focus back to the league next weekend, when we travel to Bloemfontein to face Bloem Celtic at Molemela Stadium on Sunday 10 April at 15h00.
