Kick-off: 15:00pm

Abafana Bes’thende defeated Ajax Cape Town 1-0 in their Last16 encounter at King Zwelethini Stadium this afternoon to progress to the next stages of the competition.

The first half was an open affair with neither Lamontville Golden Arrows nor Ajax Cape Town playing to their potential in the 45 minutes. However, possession and control of the game belonged to Lamontville Golden Arrows who had 5 solid shots on goal in the first half out of 11 attempts, Ajax, enjoyed only 2 from 6.

The second half belonged to Ajax for the vast majority and they returned to the field with a changed game plan. This saw them being the team who were taking the shots and putting pressure on Lamontville Golden Arrows in both the midfield and on attack. Coach Letsoaka decided to try change things up in the 60th minute by replacing N.Cele with Chapman. This made no considerable difference in play, however Ajax played at marking the fresh player more and could have contributed to a gap opening in the 71st minute as Shitolo scored after a pass from Khenyeza. He rocketed one past Jaakkola to put the home side on the board.

Ajax were not going to take it lying down and fought back hard during the remainder of the game, they dominated the play at most parts and upped their shots at goal keeping the Golden Arrows defenders on their toes. Arrows were also going hard at Ajax and had numerous of opportunities but just couldn’t get that second goal. On the attack In the 75thminute Jaakkola came out of his goals and fouled Mahachi who had a goal scoring opportunity, the referee deemed it a professional foul and gave the keeper his marching orders. This made it more difficult for Ajax and from this stage they chased the game for the remainder of the half.

The support was fantastic at the stadium and we thank all who were at the stadium for coming to get behind the side on the afternoon.
