MAMELODI SUNDOWNS 0
1 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Nedbank Cup
Date: Saturday, 08 April 2017
Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium
Kick-off: 15h00
Abafana Bes’thende are through to the Quarter final stage of the Nedbank Cup after a 66th minute goal from Nduduzo Sibiya secured the win for us.
In a well fought game from both sides that saw the side go into the changerooms with a nil-nil draw at half time, it was the second half that produced the result that we were looking for. Both coaches were indicating that they would like to score early on and set a dominance to the game. We battled to do this, while Sundowns looked dangerous within 3 minutes of play. We did threaten the home side in the first half with Sibeko having two great chances to score. The first in the 26th minute went wide and his second he was just unable to get a clean header on target just before the break.
Masandwana had their chances in the first half too, but Gumede stood strong for the side today and made some telling saves, duelly being awarded the man on the match award at the end of the game.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 66th minute of play after we were awarded a free kick. Bilankulu wasted no time, took the kick quickly and put Sibiya up the middle. He played it past 3 defenders and beat Mweene to find the back of the net and open the scoring.
Sundowns fought back hard after this but raised confidence in the team and the taste of victory being strong, fired the side to defend well against the attacking play from the home side. A final push from the home side came in the last minutes as Zakri and Castro were bought into play, but solid defensive work ensured that the goal was defended and the victory achieved.
A well fought and deserved win from the side and a great morale booster as we stay in Gauteng for a clash on Tuesday night against Wits in Braamfontein.
A big shout out to our supporters who came from Johannesburg and a special thank you to our local supporters from Lamontville who came all this way, your support is what helped us push through and this win was for you guys!
