Abafana Bes’thende and Maritzburg United have played to a 2 all draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium tonight.

It was Derby fever from the first whistle, with Maritzburg United having 3 shots at the goal within 5 minutes of game time. This set the tempo and it was 90 minutes of a tough battle on the field for both teams tonight. We opened the scoring after 18 minutes, with KG knocking the ball past Vries in a well thought out movement and then twenty minutes later Bilankulu found the back of the net after Barrios was challenged by Vries and a rebound ball saw Bilankulu well placed to finish.

Rusike managed to pull one back for the hosts just before half time with cracking shot from distance. Maritzburg United played him into the middle and left space for him to have a shot that beat Mbaeva.

The second half started with Maritzburg coming out and playing with determination again. They played a solid game that took them into the last third, but their fiishing was not to their advantage. As Derby games go, it was intense, and a number of yellows were dished out. This resulted in Onyango receiving a red after having had 2 bookable offences.

This never deterred a fighting host side, and they managed to score the equaliser in the 71st minute off the boot of Leintjies. A barrage of attacks was then seen from both sides, but neither could finish to find the winning goal of the evening.

We will return to Durban now and prepare to face Platinum Stars on Wednesday night at Princess Magogo Stadium.
