COACH’S COMMENT ON THE MATCH VS PLATINUM STARS 29.11.2010
We went into the match against Platinum Stars knowing that a good result will keep us within striking distance of the top Team in the Premier Soccer League. This was important as we are playing the same Team, Mamelodi Sundowns, in our next match. At the end, we managed to get a point in the 0-0 draw, which was not a bad result considering the overall balance of play. The first half was not good for spectators as both sides struggled to adjust to the heat. The pace of the match was slow and the quality of the passing was not the best. Despite this, we had a number of opportunities to score from a number of set-pieces that were awarded to us, and came close a few times. Our overall defensive play was good especially the two defensive midfielders who marshaled the midfield area well, disrupting the opponent’s rhythm. Having said that there were moments when Stars’ wingers tried to play long balls in an attempt to get behind our backs. They created a few opportunities this way, but our defenders were able to stand firm. The second half was played at a much higher tempo, with more speed and aggression on display. As the match progressed, it became clear that the Team that converted the number of goal-scoring opportunities that both sides created would win the match. Although I believe we were more close to getting the three points than our opponents, judging by the number of clear-cut chances we missed. In the end a draw was a fair result and we are pleased to get a point away from home. Platinum Stars gave us a good game and we were encouraged with the positive attitude and fighting spirit our players brought into the match. We now have adequate time to prepare for our next match against the log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. We have no doubt that our players will rise to the occasion and put up a sterling performance!
