BIDVEST WITS 0
2 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Absa Premiership
Date: Sunday, 17 December 2008
Venue: Bidvest Stadium
BidVest Wits fell 2-0 to Golden Arrows in an Absa Premiership match played at BidVest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Marawaan Bantam delighted the fans with nimble touches that gave his team-mates a route on goal. But despite his creativity they were unable to score.
A one-touch pass by the former Santos playmaker put Clifford Mulenga through on goal but the winger took one-touch too many and the Arrows defence regrouped to stifle the attack.
Earlier on Mulenga blasted high over Hilton Da Rocha’s goal and just did not seem in-tune for the game. Bantam on the other hand was Wits best attacking option and the number seven showed his depth with a stinging free kick in the 20th minute.
From 20 yards out he curved the ball over the wall but the Arrows goalie Helton Da Rocha was at the right place to fist the goal-bound effort over.
Despite their persistence the home team could not score but Arrows went in to the lead courtesy of an Nhlanhla Zothwane tap-in. Joseph Musonda swung in a cross from the right and Energy Murambadoro fumbled the ball to let Zothwane score in the 25th minute.
Wits tried in vain to equalise but their attempts were way off target as Arrows took the lead in to the halftime break.
Murambadoro made a fine save when he stretched to deny Vumani Mavundla a goal a minute in to the second half. The Zimbabwe keeper then closed down the angle for Thokazani Mshengu who was quickest to the loose ball but shot in to the side netting.
Mavunndla got his goal in the 55th when Marumbadoro kicked it to him and with the keeper off his line the midfielder lofted it over his head and into the back of the net from 30 yards out.
A minute later Wits’ won a penalty but Bantam’s effort was stopped by Da Rocha and then cleared off the line as Wits striker Mbongeni Dhlamini got to the loose ball first.
Wits piled on the pressure and coach Roger De Sa through on Rene Richards and Calvin Sosibo for Dhlamini and Bienvinu Tipa respectively. Arrows relied on the counter-attack as Wits threw everything forward but the hosts ran out of time and are now fourth on the log standings.
