Free State Stars continued in their impressive vein of form by earning a point from a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows at a wet Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night.
The first half failed to deliver any goals, but there was however action at both ends of the field as both sides came close to scoring.
It was Abafana Bes’thende who had more of the ball possession and they made a bright start to the game with Richard Henyekane making a strong run into the penalty box which ended in an unsuccessful penalty appeal, while a scintillating dash down the wing by Thokozani Mshengu ended only in a wildly sliced shot.
Arrows should have gone ahead when a goalmouth scramble saw Kagiso Dikgacoi kicking goal-wards. But because his shot lacked power, Francis Kombe, who was in an off-side position, was forced to apply the finishing touch and the goal was disallowed by referee Robert Smith.
The visiting side should have taken a 28th minute lead when Arrows keeper Helton Da Rocha did well to block Siyabonga Mdluli’s thunderous free kick. He did not however parry the ball to safety, which resulted in Sthembiso Ngcobo being presented with an empty net, but the Stars striker somehow managed to hit the underside of the cross bar from just five yards out.
Arrows ended the half strongly as Kombe brought out a good save by Ea Lla Koto goal keeper Kennedy Mweene with a low drive from just outside the area, while Henyekane side-footed wide from Mzuvukile Tom’s cross.
Stars reminded Arrows that they were also in the game as Ruben Cloete shot narrowly off target with a long range shot in the 40th minute.
Kombe looked set to open the scoring for the home side four minutes into the second half, but his close range shot was tipped over the bar by Mweene.
In the 55th minute the opening goal of the match arrived via the boot of Ngcobo, who took advantage of a mistake in the Arrows defence before showing his strength by holding off a challenge from Siyanda Zwane and slotting into an empty net from a tight angle.
The goal was Ngcobo’s third in two games, following his brace against SuperSport United last weekend.
The goal sparked Arrows into action as Henyekane twice forced good saves out of Mweene with shots in the 60th and 63rd minutes.
Abafana Bes’thende’s effort paid off in the 74th minute when substitute Siyabonga Vezi netted the equaliser.
The goal was also the result of a poor bit of defending – Stars defender Jonathan Mensah failed to clear a routine cross and after Philane Shange’s shot was blocked by Mweene, Vezi was on hand to follow up and slot the ball into the back of an empty net.
The result sees Stars move into 11th position, while Arrows shoot up to third spot.
