Ajax Cape Town lost further ground on the PSL title race when they went down 1-0 to Golden Arrows at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday night. The Cape Town outfit can have only themselves to blame as they missed countless clear-cut chances on the night.
The visiting side were off to a positive start and had a good chance to score in the second minute when Siyabonga Sangweni found the ball at his feet just eight yards out from goal, but the defender tried to use too many touches to get close to goal and the chance went to waste.
Arrows continued to look the more enterprising side and within the first 10 minutes Philani Shange had two shots on goal.
Ajax gradually started to find their feet, thanks mainly to their efforts of Franklin Cale down the left wing.
Sameehg Doutie also became more influential on the right flank, but on a couple of occasions he took incorrect decisions or was let down by a poor first touch.
On-form striker Mabuthi Khenyeza was quiet early on – his best chance of the first half came in the 26th minute, but instead of using the space in front of him, he attempted to chip keeper Helton Da Rocha, but his execution was poor.
Eight minutes later Arrows’ top striker, Richard Henyekane, was through on goal, but from a tight angle he was unable to beat Andre Petim, who moved off his line well to make the block.
The KZN side enjoyed the first chance of the second half when Njabulo Manqana intelligently tried to chip the ball over Petim, who was off his line.
But the best chance of the game fell to Doutie, who was unmarked in the box when Brett Evans’ free kick was floated in, but he showed no composure as he headed well over the bar.
On the hour mark Cale tested Da Rocha with a stinging long range drive and from the resultant corner Eduardo Ferreira missed another golden chance when he volleyed high with the goal at his mercy.
It was all Ajax at this stage and they were a whisker away from taking the lead in the 64th minute when Doutie’s cross-cum-shot shaved the upright.
But having failed to use their opportunities, Ajax suffered a classic sucker punch when Clifford Ngobeni lost the ball in the middle of the park and Arrows broke quickly before Kagisho Dikgacoi scored with a brilliant finish across the face of goal in the 70th minute.
Things soon got worse for the Urban Warriors when Thom-Rick Ocotber was sent off for a reckless tackle.
Khenyeza then missed another excellent chance to equalise when he headed over the bar.
With five minutes to go substitute Sifiso Vilakazi looked set to have finally scored or Ajax when he bundled the ball into the back of the net, but referee Peter Mabuza ruled the ball out for an infringement on the keeper, summing up a frustrating night for Craig Rosslee’s men.
