Golden Arrows blew the Absa Premiership title race wide open on Wednesday night, defeating SuperSport United 2-1 at the Super Stadium.
Goals in the final minutes of the first half from Nhlanhla Zothwane and Richard Henyekane saw the visitors surge into a two-goal lead, but United cut the deficit in the second half thanks to a strike from Dennis Masina. However, they were unable to find an equaliser and will now have to avoid defeat in the final game of the season if they are to lift the trophy for a second successive year.
Matsatsantsa dominated the opening stages but they were unable to capitalise on a number of good chances and the uncertainty plaguing Arrows goalkeeper Helton Da Rocha.
Instead, Abafana Bes’thende came on strong as the game went on and deservedly took the lead in the 42nd minute when Zothwane headed home a fine cross from the left.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Morgan Gould hauled down Henyekane in the box and referee Charl Theron pointed to the spot. The striker took the kick himself and buried it into the net to make it 2-0 heading into the break.
SuperSport dominated the second half and pulled one goal back in the 71st minute when Masina capitalised on a rebound after Da Rocha had saved well from Fikru Tefera’s low shot.
But it wasn’t enough for the hosts, who were lucky that Orlando Pirates could only draw 1-1 with Ajax Cape Town in their match, meaning it is still United’s title to lose. They lead by two points heading into the final round of fixtures this Saturday.
