BAY UTD 0

1 GOLDEN ARROWS

Competition: Absa Premiership
Date: Saturday, 09 May 2009
Venue: EPRU Stadium
Kick-off: 15h00

Golden Arrows defeated Bay United 1-0 at the EPRU Stadium on the final day of the Absa Premiership season to end fifth on the table.

For Umlilo it was a disappointing end to their first top flight campaign. The Eastern Cape side finished bottom of the league and will return to the national first division next year.

Abafana Bes’thende, in contrast, have enjoyed a good 2008/09 season and ending in fifth spot is a sign that Manqoba Mngqithi’s charges are very much on the up. They can also boast the league’s leading scorer, Richard Henyekane, whose tally of 18 goals sees him top the goal charts.

This result is also some revenge as far as Arrows are concerned, as Umlilo defeated the KwaZulu-Natal team 2-1 in their first league meeting earlier this season.

Both sides looked to play attacking football but only one goal was scored in the 90 minutes. Henyekane forced an error from Bay goalkeeper Sheldon Baatjies, who put the ball into his own net in the 34th minute.

Baatjies was immediately replaced by veteran Arthur Bartman, who has generally been the first choice goalminder for the struggling side throughout the season.

Both sides missed several good chances during the remainder of the game and even though Arrows were reduced to ten men when Philani Shange was sent off, they managed to hold out for another way victory.
