Ajax Cape Town’s solid, if unspectacular league form continued at Newlands on Sunday when they picked up a point from a 0-0 draw with Golden Arrows.
The match in no way came close to resembling the recent MTN8 Cup final between the same two sides as Arrows failed to reproduce the sizzling football they showed in that game and in the end a draw was a fair reflection of this Absa premiership encounter on a windy Cape Town afternoon.
The home side showed more urgency in attack early on, and in the first 20 minutes Diyo Sibisi had two shots on goal – one went just wide and the other was saved by Arrows keeper Helton Da Rocha, who also did well to tip Sameehg Doutie’s free kick over the bar.
During this period the visiting side showed very little in attack, with Richard Henyekane and Njabulo Manqanya in particular disappointing with some poor touches in good positions.
The KZN side did finally get in some shots on goal, but efforts by Henyekane and subsequently Nhlanhla Zothwane, flew straight at Ajax keeper Hans Vonk.
At the other end of the field, Ajax striker George Maluleka did well to wriggle free down the left, but could not pick out a team-mate with his ball across the box.
Five minutes before the break, Zothwane had an excellent opportunity in the box, but succeeded only in passing the ball to Vonk, rather than looking to blast it past the keeper and into the net.
The balance of the first half was rather scrappy – as Arrows attempted to up their game, the home side resorted to some physical stuff to keep their opponents at bay.
Second half action was fast paced as the Urban Warriors looked to wrestle back the initiative.
Just on the hour mark, Sibisi looked set for a great scoring chance from a central positon 18-yards out, but he took too long to get his shot away and Siyanda Zwane made a great tackle.
Doutie then looked to make his mark on the game in the 70th minute, hitting a well-struck left-footed shot from outside the box, but Da Rocha made a comfortable save.
A minute later Arrows finally had a chance of their own, but again Zothwane was guilty of missing a relatively easy chance when unmarked at a corner, he headed the ball straight at Vonk.
The game remained there for the taking and it was Arrows who nearly nicked the three points at the depth as Vusimuzi Vilakazi closed in on Zothwane’s square ball, but Nhlanhla Shabalala reacted well to clear the danger for Ajax, while Joseph Musonda should have done better with his back post header in the 89th minute.
