AJAX CAPE TOWN 2
1 GOLDEN ARROWS
Competition: Telkom Charity Cup
Date: Saturday, 28 March 2010
What a difference six months can make was demonstrated in no small measure at a noisy, but sparsely-filled Newlands Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Ajax Cape Town banished the memory of the 6-0 mauling they received from Golden Arrows in the early-season MTN8 Final to record a sweet 2-1 revenge win in a closely-contested Telkom Cup quarterfinal.
Ajax were never behind in a game of whole-hearted effort, but only occasional flashes of inspiration and forged their way into the lead for the first time in the 18th minute after one of a succession of pin-point crosses from Sameehg Doutie was deflected into the net from close-range by an alert George Maluleka.
Arrows snapped out of their early lethargy – possibly the product of their runaway win over Ajax in the MTN8 Final – and secured a speedy equaliser when Mzuvukile Tom’s shot across the goalmouth was helped into his own net by hapless Cape Town defender Nhlanhla Shabalala.
But it was Ajax who regained their lead in the 52nd minute through Stanton Lewis’s powerful, angled ground shot into the corner of the net which left Brazilian goalkeeper Helton da Rocha rooted to the ground and with no chance of saving.
Arrows, however, kept their best efforts for the end and came tantalisingly close to equalising on several occasions – with Ajax goalkeeper Hans Vonk surely thanking his lucky stars on one occasion as the ball thundered against the crossbar after seemingly heading for a certain goal.
The match took on an unsavoury colouring in the closing stages and the desperate Arrows were lucky to finish the game with 11 men after some dubious tackling threatened to leave Ajax players heading for the casualty ward at the Groote Schuur Hospital.
And Arrows had only themselves to blame for their hard-to-stomach defeat by coming out of the starter’s gate as though victory was set to be no more than a foregone conclusion and another six-pack of goals was theirs for the taking.
