A 1-1 draw saw Platinum Stars earn themselves a share of the points when they scored a late second half goal in their Absa Premiership clash against Golden arrows at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The first half was a one sided affair that saw an in-form Golden Arrows dictate play. Despite the sides sharing possession in the first 45 minutes, Abafana Bes’thende was definitely the side on top, often using their midfield and attackers to press the Tycoons back into their own half.
Golden Arrows played some beautiful passing football that created a number of chances in the half, the first of which came seven minutes into the game. Richard Henyekane struck a curling free-kick round the defensive wall and just inches wide of the upright.
Musa Bilankulu was the next Arrows man to get a shot on goal in the 17th minute. Another passing movement led to Bilankulu finding himself only 12 yards out from goal, but his shot also went inches wide of the target.
Platinum Stars’ defence was certainly made to earn their stripes as they worked their socks off throughout the half to deny Arrows any glory. This was none more evident than in the 25th minute when Mbulelo Mabizela threw his body on the line to stop a Siyanda Zwane shot.
The Tycoons were virtually non-existent in the half and hardly made it out of their own half as a result of some misplaced passing and lack of drive in the midfield.
Arrows’ best chance in the half came five minutes before the break when Thanduyise Khuboni unleashed a pile driver of a shot from just outside the 18 yard box that just skimmed the wrong side of the left hand post.
The Tycoons were definitely happy to hear the half time whistle and were thankful for the respite. However, that was shorted lived as the second started the way the first ended with Abafana Bes’thende on attack and only took them three minutes to take the lead.
Joseph Musonda drove down the right flank and whipped in an inch perfect cross that found the head of Thamsanqa Gabuza who rose above the Tycoons defence to head the ball home from only six yards out, 1-0.
That goal seemed to awaken Stars from their slumber as they began to find their rhythm after stringing a couple of passes together and attacking down the flanks. Consequently, in the 58th minute Helton Da Rocha was called into action for the first time when he brilliantly saved an Alfred Monareng header from a left wing cross.
Da Rocha was then forced into a series of saves ten minutes later, first denying Alton Meiring from 18 yards out and then substitute Almiro Lobo from only six yards out.
Arrows looked to regain their momentum from the first half but were stuttered in their attempts after being reduced to ten men in the 76th minute. Siyanda Zwane was banished from the field after receiving his second yellow card. The Tycoons saw this as the sign to go all out in attack to find an equaliser.
And they didn’t have to wait long as Lobo drew his side level in the 82nd minute. Lobo scored a wonder goal when he struck the back of the net from a 30 yard free-kick. The keeper had no chance as he watched the ball fly past him into the left-hand corner, 1-1.
Lobo nearly grabbed the winner for his side a minute before full time when he made his way into the 18 yard box with some fabulous individual skill, but his attempt on goal did not match his build-up play as it went well over the cross bar.
The game ended 1-1 and the team shared the spoils. Arrows, however, will be extremely disappointed with the result after dictating play for the majority of the game.
