In a tension packed quarter final at Bidvest Wits stadium tonight, it was eventually Wits who walked off victors with a 4-3 win on penalties after extra time finished in a 2-all draw.
The first half of the game belonged to us, as we managed to dominate on defencive gaps in the Bidvest side and a brilliant cross fron Magubane saw Lamola header in for the first goal of the game. Unfortunately for the youngster, his game was cut short after a dangerous tackle from Damjanovic saw him taken off the field with a mild concussion. Damjanovic received his marching orders and we looked at capitalising on the opposition being a player down.
This saw another great play from us, as Jooste took a gap on the left of the field, played up and had a well executed cross that found Mahachi in the perfect position to put the ball past Josephs.
Only 2 minutes later however, we conceded a penalty after a dangerous tackle just inside the box by Mngwengwe,Keene stepped up to the mark and pulled one back for the home side.
In what was to become a tension filled game, Phiri was then given a second yellow card 4 minutes into additional time in the first half and both sides went into the changeroom a player down.
After the break, it was Wits who were dominant on the field. We were often found on the back foot and Keene found the leveller for the Clever Boys, but we held them well for the remainder of the half and managed to force the game onto extra time.
Extra time saw Pienaar nearly find the back of the net for the home side, and we had a great shot from Mahachi that went just wide of the upright. But again, no result could be determined.
The game boiled over on the field as tensions grew and S.Dube received a straight red card for headbutting Mhango after he had been fouled by the Malawian.
The game was then determined on penalties, which went into sudden death, with Bidvest Wits eventually winning 4-3.
