Our chances of going to the Round of 16 in the Nedbank Cup was determined by penalties tonight after drawing 1-1 with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivandila at Thohoyandoe Stadium tonight.
In the end, we lost 7-6 on penalties, but this was not the result that we had played for after giving a concerted effort on the park. We dominated play in the first half and took the game to the home side who played a very defensive first 45 minutes. The closed down gaps as they fell back, protecting their goal. It seemed as if it was an effort to drain our energy, but this did not work for them as we continued pressing up at every opportunity.
While we created opportunities to score, we never managed to convert them, and this cost us throughout the game. We went into the break 0-0, with Tshakhuma not seeming to be concerned about not having created too many chances.
The second half of the game saw them coming to life, and once again it seemed as if they had been conserving energy and trying to drain ours in the first 45.
While they pushed us in the opening minutes, we fought back and showed them that we still had enough fight in us to take the game to them.
Matete however managed to put the home team in the lead in the 68th minute, causing us to have to change tactics. We equalised 7 minutes later with Conco doing well to finish off a great play set up by Mmodi.
These were however to be the only goals in the match and even after extra time, a winner had not been decided forcing the result to be determined by penalties.
After the mandatory 5 penalties we were square on 4 a piece and into sudden death. Mthokozisi Dube missed his attempt, leaving it to Edmore Sibande to score the winning goal for the home side.
We return home to prepare for our League fixture against Orlando Pirates later in the month.
