GOLDEN ARROWS 1

2 AMAZULU FC

Competition: PSL
Date: Tuesday, 02 November 2011
Venue: King Zwelithini
Kick-off: 19:30pm

Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of KwaZulu-Natal rivals AmaZulu in their Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was tough on Abafana Bes’thende, who dominated large portions of the game but could not reflect their superiority on the scoreboard.

An own goal from Robyn Johannes and a strike from Tsweu Mokoro sealed their fate, while they were given hope late on when Mzukukile Tom netted to set-up a grandstand finish.

The first 20 minutes was quiet as neither side were able to create any clear-cut chances in a cagey opening.

Musa Bilankulu had the first real opening but he failed to connect with a delightful Philani Shange cross.

Virgil Vries in the home goal then produced a fine save to deny Carlington Nyadombo with a long-range shot as the game began to open up as the clock moved towards halftime.

Bilankulu might have given Golden Arrows the lead on the stroke of halftime as he collected a Tom cross, but he waited too long to pull the trigger and Usuthu defence was able to scramble back and block the shot.

The visitors were ahead in fortuitous circumstances when Vries made a mess of a Johannes back-pass and the ball found its way into the net.

It was tough on the home side, who were dominating the match to that point, but their night got worse when Mokoro added a second with 16 minutes left on the clock as he converted a low cross from the right.

But the home side were handed a lifeline when Tom got the goal they deserved as Elrio van Heerden’s shot was only parried by Tapuwa Kapini and the fullback blasted home the rebound.

The home side laid siege to the AmaZulu goal after that in search of an equaliser, but try as they might they could not force the ball home.

Abafana bes’thende now prepare for their 2011 Telkom Knockout quarterfinal away at Ajax Cape Town on Sunday.
