Abafana Bes’thende had a tough afternoon as they suffered a 2-0 to Chippa United at Chatsworth Stadium this afternoon.
It was a hard game for both sides and each had to work hard to create opportunities to score. The first half was played to a goalless draw that saw both sides looking to create opportunities to get to the oppositions final third and break their defence in order to create scoring opportunities.
It seemed as though Abafana Bes’thende’s game plan was a solid 90 minute attack as Mahachi went in for a shot in the first minute of the game, however Chippa managed to counter a great deal of the play, closing down Hotto, Musonda and Mahachi when Arrows went up on attack.
This resulted in a large number of play taking place in the midfield, tiring both teams players
The second half seemed to be a more energetic half from the whistle, and again both teams fought hard to get a break through with regards to opening the scoring. The first 20 minutes of the half saw Shitolo, Zitha as well as Mahachi having shots at goal, but nothing gave for the home team.
Chippa United had their breakthrough off the boot of Mthiyane from a right footed shot that found Gumede at sixes and sevens. Lamontville Golden Arrows were then unlucky not to be awarded a penalty after a take down in the box, and Arrows just could not seem to get on top of the game after this.
Manzini scored the second for Chippa, and once again Gumede was beaten to take the visitors 2 up on the verge of extra time.
There will be a week to consolidate and prepare before we meet Maritzburg United on Saturday 23rd at Chatsworth Stadium in a KZN Derby.
