Lamontville Golden Arrows have made a fine start to 2013 with a 2-0 victory over University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a well-deserved victory for Abafana Bes’thende, who move six points clear of the relegation zone and are now looking up rather than down at the top eight positions.

Both goals came from Bongi Ntuli taking his tally for the season to five and a great way for him to kick-off the second half of the season.

Coach Manqoba Mngqithi handed a debuts to recent arrivals Masonwabe Bovu and Gift Sithole, and started with two up front in the form of Thamsanqa Gabuza and Ntuli.

There was an early scare for the visitors when Dumisani Ngwenya crossed for the giant forward Mame Niang, whose header was pushed away by Pavels Steinbors in the Golden Arrows goal.
Ntuli headed over from a good position, while Nhlanhla Zothwane also blazed over the bar from just outside the penalty area.

The lively Zothwane then forced a fine save out of AmaTuks goalkeeper Washington Arubi as the gloveman tipped his 30-yard rocket over the bar.

The goal the visitors had been threatening duly arrived just a minute before the break, Ntuli drilling the ball home with a well-taken effort.

Arrows largely controlled the second period, allowing the home side possession, but AmaTuks could do little with it.

Steinbors produced a good finger-tip save to deny Buhle Mkhwanazi’s header late on, but there was precious little else for the home side to cheer.

The win was secured with two minutes to go, Gabuza’s cross turned home by Ntuli for another neat finish.

Next up for Abafana Bes’thende is a Durban Derby against AmaZulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday evening. The match has a 18h00 kickoff.
