Lamontville Golden Arrows have suffered a 3-1 loss to Free State Stars in their Telkom Knockout first round clash at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.

Abafana Bes’thende dominated large parts of the game, but could not make that supremacy count and will now target success in the Nedbank Cup as they seek silverware this season.

Golden Arrows coach Muhsin Ertugral went with a forward line of Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bongi Ntuli, with Zambian star Justine Zulu taking up his place in midfield.

After Arrows had gone close early on with a header, Mzuvukile Tom had his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by a scrambling Stars defence.

But the home side were ahead against the run of play on 30 minutes when Luyolo Nomandela made a rampaging run down the left flank and his cross was converted at the back post by Katlego Mashego with not a defender in sight.

Ertugral made a change on 34 minutes when he withdrew Nkosinathi Ogle and brought on striker Norman Smith, a massively positive move from the coach.

But it was 2-0 five minutes before halftime as Mashego’s long-range shot was only parried by Pavels Steinbors in the visitors’ goal and Moeketsi Mvula was on hand to bury the rebound.
Abafana Bes’thende were briefly back to just one goal behind when Bongi Ntuli netted two minutes after the break to reduce the deficit, but unfortunately for them it was short-lived.
Nomandela, who was having a fantastic game, took the score to 3-1 once more just two minutes later and settling the nerves of the home side.

Arrows made their final change, replacing Ritus Krjauklis with Mxolosi Machupu and just a minute later Machupu fired wide with only a keeper to beat. He should have done better.

Stars were able to play out the remainder of the fixture, with coach Steve Komphela bringing on fresh legs in the final 10 minutes to make sure the space was closed down for the visitors.

Lamontville Golden Arrows will now look forward to their next League fixture, a home match against newly-promoted Chippa United next Saturday. Free State Stars are away at Platinum Stars on the same weekend.
