GOLDEN ARROWS 2
1 MOROKA SWALLOWS
Competition: PSL
Date: Wednesday, 06 November 2013
Venue: King Zwelethini Stadium
Kick-off: 19:30
Lamontville Golden Arrows claimed their second win of the Absa Premiership season with a 2-1 success over high-flying Moroka Swallows at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday night.
The victory is the first for new coach Mark Harrison and moves Abafana Bes’thende off the foot of the table as goals from Thulasizwe Khuboni and Bongi Ntuli gave them the three points.
Luvehngo Mungomeni ensured a tense finish to the game when he pulled one back for Swallows, but the home side were able to hold on for the win, their first at home this season.
The platform for success was laid by an sizzling opening 20 minutes in which Golden Arrows scored twice.
Ntuli was felled in the penalty area by Rudi Isaacs and Khuboni stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
That had the home side’s tails up and they poured forward in search of a second. They were duly rewarded when Ntuli sprung the offside trap and raced clear to score past Greg Etafia.
Philani Shange had an excellent chance to make it 3-0 just before the break when he latched onto a pass from Mzuvukile Tom, but put his effort side.
The winger then found himself in acres of space 12 minutes into the second half, but this time was thwarted by the goalkeeper.
Arrows were served a warning of Mungomeni’s threat in the air when he headed wide from a Lerato Chabangu corner when he really should of hit the target.
And the same two players combined 15 minutes later when Mungomeni headed home a free-kick from Chabangu to set up a nerve-wracking close for the home team.
Just before that Siyabonga Nomvethe had the ball in the back of the net but the effort was ruled out for offside.
Chabangu might have stolen a point for Swallows at the death, but his shot was weak and easily saved by Nkosi Gumede.
Next up for Arrows is a trip to SuperSport United on Saturday night.
